What is Freaknik
Freaknik is an annual Spring Break Festival in Atlanta, Georgia. Mainly students from historically black colleges participate. It started as a small picnic in a public park near the Atlanta University Center in 1983 and was originally sponsored by the DC Metro Club. It is usually held on the third weekend of April to coincide with the Center’s school reading day. The event grew in size and popularity in the 1990s and included dance contests, concerts, parties, basketball tournaments, lap sessions, film festivals, and job fairs. Atlanta magazine called it Atlanta’s most notorious street festival. In 1999, Freaknik’s celebration was interrupted by actions by police and elected officials. An improved version of Freaknik will be back in 2019 and will evolve into a three-day summer event centered around artist performance.
The name of the event comes from the combination of “Freaky” and “Picnic”. In the early 1990s, people were unfamiliar with the name of the event pronounced Friknic, like “Freaknic,” and the change in pronunciation spread rapidly.
