Three reasons why Nico Lamaleava was always better suited for Tennessee Vols than Arch Manning
1.Nico fits better with Josh Hupel’s attack
One of the reasons Tennessee and Arch didn’t come together was the attack of Josh Hupel. Arch prefers a more professional-style system, and what Hupel performs is closer to the old Baylor Beer, shooting attacks mixed with some aerial attack concepts. This aggressive style has permeated the NFL in recent years, thanks to players like Patrick Mahomes and coaches like Kliff Kingsbury. But Arch is sticking to certain types of crime.
Iamaleava is a more physically talented player who can use his feet to erect his defenses and his strong arms to hit the receiver in his crotch when Hupel’s plan is open. Arch is a bit more athletic than his uncle Peyton, but not at Nico’s level. Iamaleava is perfect for Vols as it can perform all
vertical throws.
2. Media attention to Nico
I’m here with me and I know that Manning’s adoption is getting the media attention. But now that he’s committed, that attention will almost diminish. Manning is not a player who likes to be in the limelight. He doesn’t do many interviews and isn’t everywhere on social media. On the other hand, Nico is displayed without any problem. This is what Vols needs when trying to rebuild the program. Tennessee needs a player like Nico to get attention and change the perception of the program. UT needs him to take a picture with his fans. The more attention Nico gets, the better it is for Vols. Of course, Arch would have received a lot of attention in Tennessee, but his hesitation in getting public attention wouldn’t have benefited Vols in the public relations department.
3. Expectations
If Arch had reached Tennessee, expectations would not have been worldly. Every step he took would have been compared to Peyton. And if he hadn’t won the national championship in Tennessee, Arch couldn’t have lived up to his expectations. Winning a national championship at the college level is one of the most difficult things to do in sports. Fans of Vols don’t want to hear that, but Arch may not have won in Knoxville (I don’t think he will win in Texas either). The pressure that Arch would have faced in Tennessee would have been intolerable to both sides.
Vols wisely identified their man early and locked him in. Arch may have a common name, but Nico is the 2023 quarterback best suited to support the success of Rocky Top.
